Cecilia Freire

Her name is Cecilia Freire  and she is an actress who performs the cheerful and reliable Rita in the TV show Velvet. She's a celebrity of the country. She was born in Madrid, but she's now living in Barcelona. Her fame is due to the TV show Física o Química, where she performed Blanca, a mad English teacher. Cecilia is in her middle-twenties and she's now living one of the greatest times of her career as an actress.

She is nearly as tall as me, she's thin, but not as thin as a rake, of course. She has got medium-length, curly, blond hair; sparkling, big blue eyes with large eyelashes. Her nose is slightly pointed, although it's nothing exaggerated. Her mouth has slim lips and huge white teeth. As she smiles a lot, she's most of the time showing them.

I don't know Cecilia personally, but she seems indeed to have a heart of gold. Her mates say that she is confident and very sensible. That's because she thinks twice before acting, not only in the TV world but in the real life. She is a very cold-headed person and very hard-working.

She's  very optimistic and calm, both qualities that I admire a lot, so, it would be a huge pleasure to meet her.

ALEXANDER FLEMING

Fleming was a Scottish bacteriologist and Nobel Prize winner, best known for his discovery of penicillin.

Alexander Fleming was born in Ayrshire on 6th August 1881, the son of a farmer. He moved to London at the age of 13 and later trained as a doctor. He qualified with distinction in 1906 and began research at St Mary's Hospital Medical School at the University of London under Sir Almroth Wright, a pioneer in vaccine therapy. In World War One, Fleming served in the Army Medical Corps and was mentioned in dispatches. After the war, he returned to St Mary's.

In 1928, while studying influenza, Fleming noticed that mould had developed accidentally on a set of culture dishes being used to grow the staphylococci germ. The mould had created a bacteria-free circle around itself. Fleming experimented further and named the active substance "penicillin".

It was two other scientists, however, Australian Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, a refugee from Nazi Germany, who developed penicillin further so that it could be produced as a drug. At first supplies of penicillin were very limited, but by the 1940s it was being mass-produced by the American drugs industry.

Fleming wrote numerous papers on bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy. He was elected professor of the medical school in 1928 and emeritus professor of bacteriology at the University of London in 1948. He was elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1943 and knighted in 1944. In 1945 Fleming, Florey and Chain shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Fleming died on 11(*) March 1955.

FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States of America, he was the president of the United States for more than ten years and he is one of the most remembered presidents of the history of this country.

Franklin Roosevelt was born the 30 of January of 1882, in a village called Hyde Park located in the east cost of the United States. He grew up in a traditional American upper class family. The Roosevelt family had always been related with politics; in fact another President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, was a member of Franklin Roosevelt’s family. While he was a child he used to travel to Europe, there he learnt French and Germany. He was a very good student and he got graduated in law for Harvard University. He got married in 1905 with Eleanor Roosevelt, just a year before he got graduated, and they got six children: Anna, James, Franklin, Eliot, Franklin Delano Junior and John.

In 1908 he began working with Ledyard and Milburn, a prestigious Wall Street company, where he exercised mainly corporate law. His political career started in 1910 when he was elected as a member of New York senate for the Democratic Party. From 1910 to 1933 he advanced in the politics world, during this period he was Assistant secretary of the navy and the 44th governor of the state of New York. The 4th of March of 1933 he was elected the President of the United States for the first time. He also worked closely to the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the URSS leader Joseph Stalin, in order to fight against the fascism in the Second World War.  He had been re-elected four times, and he governed for twelve years until he died the 12 of April of 1945.

He died because of the polio, an illness which he contracted while he was on vacation in 1921. Although he couldn’t walk, hi fight over his illness and succeed in politics, being one of the most important persons in the last century. In my opinion Franklin Roosevelt was an excellent person, who should be remembered for many facts, but mainly for his fight against polio and because he was the person who introduced the New Deal, which was a relief for the unemployed and poor people and the recovery of the economy. In conclusion, Franklin Roosevelt is one of my role models.

Miles Davis was the son of a dentist, Dr. Miles Dewey Davis and a music teacher, Cleota Mae Davis. He became interested in music during his childhood and at the age of twelve he started to get trumpet lessons. Still in school, he began to get jobs playing in local bars and when he was 17, he joined a regional band from San Louis.
His first musical success came in 1944 when, after graduating, he played with Billy Eckstine’s band, which was making a tour in his city.
During the summer of 1948, Davis formed a group of nine musicians and achieved a contract with Capitol Records. Then, the group entered in a study to record the first of three sessions.
In the early fifties Davis's musical career was affected by his addiction to heroin, but in January 1951 he began new series of recordings for the Prestige label, which became his most relevant work for many years.

The lack of new ideas, his drug addiction and a serious accident, moved Miles from the music for a long period. However, he returned to the music scene in the early 80s with recordings in which he got carried away by new trends.

His father was an Afghan diplomat who worked at the Afghan Foreign Ministry and his mother, a high school teacher taught Farsi and History in a large Kabul school. I have chosen this writter because I have read all his books and they all are amazing, but specially The Kite Runner which is my favorite book, I must say that it made me cry. It was one of the very few books that actually kept me gripped until the end. It opened up my eyes to the harsh realities of what life can be in Afghanistan. I believe this book is a must-sead, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. It delivers a univeral message that would move even the coldest heart. It is also a perfect example of father-son relationships and friendships.

Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Edison was born on February the 11th of 1847 in Ohio, Milan. His father had just stablished there because he had to escape from Canada due to a rebellion between English people and Canadians. Edison was the smallest of the four brothers.

Suddenly, as a consequence of the crisis, the family moved to a better place in order to find an employment: Port Huron, in Michigan. At the age of seven, Thomas assisted for the first time at school, but actually misbehaved and didn’t pay enough attention. Three month later, he left school and he was thought by his mother, Nancy Elliot, who was an old teacher. The woman put such an interest on his son that he got more and more interested and curious about learning. Furthermore, he was developing a huge virtue.

At the age of 10, Edison placed his first lab on the basement of his house. As he was very imaginative and enterprising, he decided to sell newspapers on the train. With the money he earned, he bought scientific books and magazines. One of his most valuable books was Michael Faraday’s Experimental Researches in Electricity, whose reading influenced him a lot.

From that moment, at the age of 21 he became a self-employed inventor. Although he was talented, he had no money, and he spent most of his youngness working city by city in different telegraph companies. One day a friend offered him a place to live in the storehouse his company, because he was slightly poor. Once there, a necessary machine broke and no one was able to repair it, so in a few seconds, the company had his machine repaired by Edison.

Thanks of that, a well-known telegraph company bet for him and requested him the invention of a printer. It was his first popular invent. He was paid with 40 000 $ and he invest the money in settle down. He got married and had a child in 1871.

Sooner, he thought of the construction of an investigation center full of books, studios and labs. He had many collaborators and eventually, invented the phonograph.

In that period, he married again and became a social man. He turned his lab in a thec-centre called “The Edison lab”, with 5000 employees.

His last gadget was the kinetograph, also related with electricity, and was used for watching films individually. Although he was the inventor, the big success was sooner for the Lumière Brother, who invented the cinematograph.

Edison invented till the end of his life, at the age of 84 years old.

(It is a bit long because it will be my oral presentation)
It is a wonderful piece of writing, my dear.

Alexander Fleming

Alexander Fleming, who had been famous for his discovery of the antibiotic substance penicillin, was born on August 6th, 1881 in the Scottish city of Lochfield, near Darvel. He studied medicine at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in Paddington because his elder brother suggested him to study it.

So, after being working at St Mary’s Hospital of London until the World War I, where he worked in the microbiology and the vaccines and showed interest about new treatments about it, he was a doctor during the war and he stayed impressed about the huge number of soldiers who died because of infections. At that point, he started to investigate about the bacteria and ten years later of the finish of the war, Fleming discovered accidentally the Penicillin.

Fleming reported his discovery of penicillin in the British Journal of Experimental Pathology in 1929. Unfortunately, until the World War II, the Penicillin hadn’t caught the recognition and the importance that it really had. What is more, Fleming could improve the antibiotic with the help of two chemicals, Ernst Boris Chain and Howard Walter Florey. His discovery of penicillin had changed the world of modern medicine by introducing the age of useful antibiotics; penicillin has saved, and is still saving, millions of people around the world.

THOMAS EDISON

Thomas Edison.jpg
Thomas Edison was born in the state of Ohio U.S. in 1847. Early in his life, he moved with his family to Michigan. When he was 13, he became deaf and because of this he started to read about physics, chemistry, electricity... In 1862, he saves the son of a telegrapher which teaches him about the Morse code. Learning about the telegraph was the beginning of his career as an inventor and businessman.

Later, in 1869 he moved to New York and he rented a room in the Wall Street. One day he helped an engineer to repair a machine and he became the engineer helper. Afterwards, he creates the «Edison Universal Stock Printer». Society that sells some time later for 40.000$, and with this big amount of money he creates his industrial empire “Menlo Park” in which worked 60 Scientifics and they developed to 400 patents. The most famous inventions he developed with his company are: the phonograph in 1877 which recorded and re-played the 2 last minutes of use. In 1879 he developed the electric bulb with a strand of bamboo inside. But later in 1881 he patented with Joseph V. Nicols the bulb with a strand o carbon inside. In 1882 he founded the first power producer. Finally, he developed the first alkaline battery.

Maybe Edison didn’t invent all the things he patented, but it’s clear that his intelligence of science and business were the key to discover all this incredible things. He finally died in 1931 in Nova Jersey with 1093 patents. I think that he is an example to follow and do the same as him: Help to the development of our society.

Thomas Alva Edison: “I will give electricity so cheap that only the rich will be able to afford the luxury of using candles.”

Who is this Drake?

In comparison to other rappers, this one seems not to be so popular. Nevertheless, he has been my favorite singer for years. Aubrey Drake Graham is the world's only black Jewish Canadian actor and rap singer. He was born on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Canada. His father is an African-American Catholic who was a drummer for the legendary rock star Jerry Lee Lewis, and his mother is a white Canadian Jew.

By the age of 5 his parents were divorced and he was raised by his mother. Despite his Jewish education, he felt isolated in the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute because nobody understood what it was like to be black and Jewish. However, being different from everyone else just made him stronger. In 2001, while starring a role in the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation he began attempting his transition into the world of music. He released his first mixtape, Room for Improvement and by 2006 it achieved big sales around 6,000 copies. Most of his lyricism is in regard to his riches, fame and past relationships. After touring and recording with the rap star Lil Wayne in 2008, Drake released his third mixtape, So Far Gone, in February 2009. It featured a single called "Best I Ever Had", which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.

Nowadays Drake continues his career as a rapper and by the moment, he is on an Europe tour. Unfortunately he is not coming to Spain so I will not have the opportunity to go to a concert. For me, he is not only a singer but also an inspirational icon. I know it may sound fanatic but his dramatic and nostalgic music is also tender and warm and sometimes it motivates me to go on and try to enjoy more my everyday.
