The Kunene region encompasses the far northwest of Namibia. One of the least accessible and seldom visited areas of Namibia. The Kunene River runs through rugged and otherwise dry mountain landscape at the border between northern Namibia and Angola.  South of the river lies a vast landscape of craggy ridges, sweeping valleys of pale grass and very little else.  Formerly known as Kaokoland, the population here amounts to about one person every 2km2 which even by Namibian standards is pretty sparse.

The main attractions of this area are the impossibly surreal views, desert-adapted flora and fauna, the Ruacana and Epupa Falls on the Kunene River, and encounters with the ochred, statuesque Himba people.

The Ruacana is about as high as Victoria Falls at 120m and 700m wide, whereas the Epupa Falls is more a series of cascades. The area around Epupa is particularly picturesque with baobabs, figs and makalani palms alongside richly-coloured rock banks.

The Kunene region is a major challenge which should not be undertaken lightly. A minimum of two well-equipped vehicles with many spare tyres is a basic necessity as the rocky roads can cut through rubber like soft cheese. There are relatively few places to re-stock and stay and the best way to see this area is either by flying in to stay in one of the very few camps, or a mobile tented safari which gives you remarkable freedom and a very intrepid feel.
